The Trafic engine changed family three times in twenty-three years: F9Q, M9R and R9M are not interchangeable

From 2001 to 2024, the diesel Trafic went through three generations of engines with no mechanical continuity between them. The F9Q was fitted to the Trafic II from its launch in 2001 and covers the period up to 2006, with six distinct engine codes (F9Q-670, F9Q-750, F9Q-760, F9Q-762, F9Q-772, F9Q-774) corresponding to power output variants or injection configuration differences. The M9R took over from 2006 on the 2.0 dCi and remained in production until 2014: ten codes coexist within this family (M9R630 through to M9R7M7), reflecting the diversity of calibrations depending on market and power output. Finally, the R9M arrived with the Trafic III in 2014 on the 1.6 dCi and runs through to 2024, with ten codes identified, including R9M408, R9M409, R9M414, R9M415, R9M452, R9MA4A4, R9MMD, R9MME, R9M_413 and R9M_450.

Why the date alone is not enough to identify the correct engine

On the Trafic III 1.6 dCi, several R9M codes span the same production years yet correspond to different power outputs or emissions standards. A 2016 Trafic III may be fitted with an R9M408, an R9M414 or an R9M452 depending on its exact specification. The only reliable way to identify the engine is the code stamped on the engine block or the manufacturer's plate — not the engine capacity or the year alone. The same logic applies to the M9R on the 2.0 dCi: ten variants across eight years of production, with internal differences that make certain codes non-interchangeable.

F9Q, M9R, R9M: known weaknesses for each generation

The F9Q is a 1.9 indirect-injection engine (rotary pump or common rail depending on the code), regarded as robust but prone to EGR valve clogging and injector wear on the older codes. The M9R, a 2.0 common rail unit, is known for timing chain issues when lubrication is inadequate and for head gasket fragility at high mileage. The R9M 1.6, the most recent of the three, exhibits on certain codes weaknesses related to the cooling circuit and thermal management — well-documented issues on this generation of Renault-Nissan engines. All engines offered here are bare engines: ancillaries (turbo, injectors, alternator, starter motor) are not included and must be transferred from the original engine.
