Which R9M engine code fits your Trafic 1.6 dCi, and why does it matter?

The 1.6 dCi in the Trafic III is built around the R9M architecture, shared across several Alliance light commercial vehicles, but this engine family comes in ten distinct codes — R9M408, R9M409, R9M413, R9M414, R9M415, R9M450, R9M452, R9MA4A4, R9MMD, R9MME — covering the 2014–2024 period. Two engines with different codes can look identical to the naked eye yet be completely incompatible at the point of installation.

Why the engine code is the only valid starting point

On this generation of Trafic, the rated power output (115, 120, 125, 140 or 145 hp depending on the variant) is not enough to identify the engine: several power outputs share the same code, and conversely the same power output can correspond to different codes depending on the year of manufacture or the vehicle configuration (crew cab, combi, chassis cab). Known weak points of the R9M in the Trafic III

The R9M is an aluminium block with a timing chain. The most well-documented weaknesses on high-mileage units involve premature timing chain wear and tensioner failure, EGR circuit clogging under heavy urban use, and fragile piezo injectors on the higher-powered variants.
