The Trafic II 2.0 dCi is built around the M9R block, yet this designation covers ten distinct variants: M9R_710, M9R780, M9R782, M9R784, M9R786, M9R788, M9R692, M9R630, M9R7E7 and M9R7M7. These suffixes correspond to different power outputs (115 hp or 90 hp depending on the version) and to injection or turbo calibrations specific to each model year between 2006 and 2014. Mixing up two suffixes can lead to incompatibility with mountings or engine management. The engine code is stamped on the block on the timing side: this is the only reliable reference — the manufacturer's plate is not always sufficient on commercial vehicles that have changed hands.

Key points to watch for with the M9R in commercial vehicle use

On heavily used Trafic vans, first-generation M9R units (2006–2009) are known to be susceptible to EGR circuit fouling and premature valve seat wear when poor-quality fuel has been used. Variants produced after 2010 incorporate improvements to the cylinder head and thermal management.
