8 engine families, 35 engine codes: how the Scénic points towards exchange or rebuild

On the Scénic, from 1999 to 2022, the range of engines is genuinely broad: two petrol families (1.2 TCe, 1.3 TCe, 1.6 16V) and five diesel families (1.5 dCi, 1.6 dCi, 1.9 dCi, 2.0 dCi) span very different generations. This alone shapes the decision: a common engine available in several variants is straightforward to replace on an exchange basis. A rare engine, or one specific to a short production run, may make rebuilding the original unit the more sensible route — particularly when supply of an equivalent reconditioned engine is tight, or when the vehicle has heritage value.

The K9K leads the way, followed by the M9R and F9Q: three very unequal weights

The 1.5 dCi alone accounts for sixteen K9K engine variants, making it by far the most widely represented engine in the catalogue. This variety is not a minor detail: at the same engine capacity, two Scénics from different generations may take mutually incompatible engines. Only the engine code stamped on the block — K9K292, K9K636, K9K802, K9K896, or one of the twelve others — allows you to identify the correct reconditioned unit. The 2.0 dCi (M9R, eight codes from M9R721 to M9R802) follows with comparable complexity. The 1.9 dCi (F9Q800, F9Q812, F9QJ803) covers the earliest generations; the exchange supply for this unit is narrower, which may tip the balance towards a rebuild if the original engine is structurally sound.

Petrol: three families with distinct profiles

The 1.6 16V (K4M_813) is the sole representative of the older naturally aspirated generation. The 1.2 TCe (H5F_404, H5F_408) and 1.3 TCe (H5H_450, H5H_470) belong to more recent turbocharged architectures, with two codes each. For these petrol engines, the volume of reconditioned units available on an exchange basis is structurally more limited than for diesels: if the original engine has suffered localised damage without widespread internal failure, rebuilding the customer's own unit may be the most straightforward route. The 1.6 dCi 130 (R9M414) and the 1.6 dCi (R9M402, R9MABC4) round out the diesel range with R9M codes that must not be swapped despite the shared engine capacity.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a engine for this Renault model in stock?

We currently list 35 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Renault?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right engine for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old engine (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the engine for my Renault?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
