From the F9Q of the 2000s to the recent 1.3 TCe: two very different turbo philosophies on the Scénic

The Scénic has spanned several generations, alternating between turbocharged diesel and petrol engines. On the diesel side, the range runs from the 1.9 dCi (F9Q blocks) through the 1.5 dCi (K9K blocks) and on to the 1.6 dCi (R9M). These engines use variable-geometry turbos, whose adjustable-vane turbine is directly exposed to high-temperature exhaust gases — a thermal stress considerably more severe than on wastegate-based designs. On the petrol side, the 1.2 TCe (H5F) and 1.3 TCe (H5H) use a fixed-geometry design with wastegate pressure regulation, in a less extreme thermal environment — though they face more frequent low-rpm demands, particularly in urban use.

Identifying your engine block precisely: the engine code is essential

    The complexity of the Scénic stems from the sheer number of variants sharing the same nominal output. The 1.5 dCi 110 hp, for example, covers the codes K9K 636, K9K 836, K9K 837, K9K 846, K9K646, K9K647, K9K648, K9K649, K9K656, K9K657 — each of which may correspond to a different turbo reference. Likewise, the 1.9 dCi spans the F9Q 732, F9Q 733, F9Q 738, F9Q 740 blocks for the 102–105 hp versions, F9Q803, F9Q804, F9Q816, F9Q818 for the 110–130 hp versions, and F9Q 870, F9Q 872 for the 131 hp version. On the petrol side, the 1.2 TCe exists as H5F 400, H5F 402, H5F 403, H5F 404, H5F 405, H5F 408, H5F 410 or H5F 412 depending on output and year; the 1.3 TCe is split between H5H 450, H5H 470, H5H 480 and H5H 490. Mixing up two codes within the same engine capacity leads to an incompatible reference.

Symptoms and causes by engine family

On F9Q variable-geometry units, actuator fouling and vane seizure are the most commonly documented failures; a dull whistling noise on acceleration or a drop in boost pressure are the typical signs. On K9K units, bearing wear caused by degraded oil or overdue service intervals weakens the CHRA. On H5F and H5H blocks, compressor-side seal leaks and oil-return lubrication issues are more common, often made worse by switching the engine off immediately after a period of high load. In every case, addressing the root cause of the failure — oil circuit, EGR, DPF, air intake — before fitting the replacement is what determines the service life of the new part. All turbos listed here are new parts, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault Scénic Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Scénic Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
