1.5 dCi: over 40 distinct K9K codes in the database, and each one can point to a different turbo reference

On the 1.5 dCi, the engine code is the essential starting point. The K9K family is common across the entire range — Renault Clio, Mégane, Kangoo, Scénic, Captur, Kadjar, Dacia Sandero, Logan, Duster, Lodgy, Nissan Micra, Juke, Qashqai, Note — but it breaks down into dozens of variants: K9K 608, K9K 628, K9K 700, K9K 702, K9K 704, K9K 712, K9K 728, K9K 760, K9K 836, K9K 846, K9K 856, K9K 896 and many more. The same power output — 90 hp for example — can correspond to different codes depending on the model and generation, and those codes do not necessarily share the same turbo reference. Reading the code stamped on the block, rather than relying solely on the stated power output, is the only reliable approach.

Rated power and engine code: two complementary pieces of information, not interchangeable

The 1.5 dCi covers a wide spectrum: from 65 hp up to 110 hp, with intermediate outputs at 68, 75, 80, 82, 84, 86, 88, 90, 100, 101, 103, 105, 106, 109 hp. Several of these outputs coexist on the same model depending on the year of sale. As a result, a K9K 700 may appear under a 65 hp entry on certain vehicles and under an entry covering 65 and 82 hp on others. Likewise, the codes K9K 636, K9K 846 or K9K 837 appear in 110 hp entries, while K9K 856 and K9K 898 are found on 109 or 110 hp versions including 4-wheel drive variants. The manufacturer's turbo reference — and its equivalent references — varies according to this precise code: ordering on the basis of power output alone risks an incorrect reference.

Failure causes and points to check before replacement

On the 1.5 dCi, turbo failures most commonly present as blue or black exhaust smoke, an unusual whistling under load, or a sharp drop in acceleration. Recurring causes on this engine are degraded lubrication — oil that is too old or a clogged circuit — and progressive fouling linked to a diesel particulate filter subjected to intensive urban use. Excessive play on the CHRA shaft or an oil leak at the turbo's seals are warning signs that must not be ignored. Before any replacement, addressing the root cause of the failure is essential: fitting a new turbo without flushing the oil circuit and checking the feed pipe will invariably lead to another failure. All turbos listed on this page are new parts, sold outright, with no old unit to return.
