1.2 TCe: two engine code families (D4F and H5F) – and why it makes all the difference to the manufacturer's turbo reference

On the 1.2 TCe, the answer comes down to two distinct engine families: the D4F codes (D4F 780, D4F 782, D4F 784, D4F 786) on one side, and the H5F codes (H5F 400, H5F 402, H5F 403, H5F 404, H5F 405, H5F 408, H5F 410, H5F 412, H5FT) on the other – and these two families do not share the same turbo references. This is the essential starting point before any search: identify your engine code family, then your exact code.

Why the same 1.2 TCe can take different turbos depending on the engine code

The H5F codes cover a power range running from 100 hp to 132 hp across the engine variants listed on this page — 1.2 TCe 100, 1.2 TCe 115, 1.2 TCe 116, 1.2 TCe 120, 1.2 TCe 125, 1.2 TCe 130, 1.2 TCe 132 — and a single H5F code can appear across several different power outputs. This means that the code alone is not enough to determine the manufacturer's reference: you need to cross-reference the engine code with the vehicle and the exact power output shown on the registration document. For example, the code H5F 408 appears in 115 hp, 120 hp and 132 hp variants depending on the vehicle's specification.

The D4F codes (780, 782, 784, 786) correspond to earlier versions of the 1.2 turbocharged petrol engine, fitted to vehicles such as the Renault Clio and the Renault Twingo. Their manufacturer references and equivalent references have nothing in common with those of the H5F: confusing the two families will inevitably result in ordering an incompatible part.

Causes of failure and precautions before replacement

On a small-capacity turbocharged petrol engine, lubrication of the turbo bearings is the critical point. Degraded oil, a blocked oil feed circuit, or an interruption to the oil supply at the moment of engine shutdown are the most common causes of premature CHRA wear. Typical symptoms include an abnormal whistling noise under acceleration, visible exhaust smoke, or a clear drop in boost pressure build-up. Before fitting a new turbo, it is essential to check the oil feed circuit for leaks and to eliminate the original cause of the failure: a new turbo fitted to a faulty circuit will not last.

All turbos listed here are brand-new turbos, sold with no old unit to return. Vehicles covered include the Renault Mégane, Renault Scénic, Renault Captur, Dacia Duster and Dacia Lodgy, though checking the engine code remains essential regardless of the model.
