Why does the turbo on your Mégane 1.2 TCe fail?

On Renault Mégane models fitted with the 1.2 TCe engine, the turbocharger operates under particularly demanding conditions. This downsized petrol engine is well known for a tendency to excessive oil consumption, linked to piston ring design and insufficient vacuum in the intake manifold. When the oil level drops unnoticed, turbo lubrication becomes inadequate and the bearings wear prematurely, eventually leading to seizure. Poor-quality oil, overdue oil changes, a clogged air filter or deteriorated intake hoses all make the problem worse on these engines.

Advice before fitting on a Mégane 1.2 TCe

To protect your new turbo, a few checks are essential before fitting it to your Mégane:

  • Check the condition of the oil circuit and replace the oil and oil filter before installation.
  • Check that the air filter is clean and that there are no leaks on the intake hoses or intercooler.
  • Inspect the turbo oil feed and return hoses for any carbon or sludge deposits.
  • Prime the oil circuit before the first start to avoid the turbo running dry.
  • Drive gently for the first few kilometres, allowing the engine to reach operating temperature gradually.
