Renault Master: all engines are diesel, but are all the turbos the same?

The answer is no — and that is precisely where the identification pitfalls lie. The Renault Master offers no petrol version in this catalogue: every engine is diesel, from the 1.9 dTi 80 hp through to the many variants of the 2.3 dCi. That uniformity of fuel type does not, however, make choosing the right turbo any simpler. A heavy-load van, a minibus, a panel van or a chassis-cab all put different demands on the turbo: sustained high-load revs, short urban cycles, repeated heat spikes. These thermal and mechanical stresses also vary with engine capacity and power output, and they have shaped the technical choices made for each generation of engine block.

Four engine families, distinct turbo architectures

This guide covers four engine families. The F8Q and F9Q blocks (1.9 dTi 80 hp, 1.9 dCi 82 and 100/102 hp) are the oldest; the F8Q is one of the few codes that does not belong to the F9Q family. The G9T 720 / 722 / 750 covers the 2.2 dCi 90 hp; the G9U (632, 650, 720, 724, 750, 754) are fitted to the 2.5 dCi from 100 to 120 hp. The S9W (700, 702) powers the 2.8 DTI 114 and 115 hp, while the ZD3 is exclusive to the 3.0 dCi 140 hp. Finally, the M9T family — with its sub-codes 670, 672, 676, 704, 706, 716, 726, 870 — covers the entire 2.3 dCi range, from 100 to 180 hp depending on the variant. Each M9T sub-code does not correspond to the same power outputs: an M9T704 (163 hp) does not take the same turbo as an M9T670 (100 to 125 hp).

Common symptoms and causes to address before replacement

On a high-mileage van, the signs of a failing turbo include a gradual loss of power, an abnormal whistling noise under acceleration, blue or black smoke, or the vehicle entering limp-home mode. On diesel engines with variable-geometry turbos — common on the more recent 2.3 dCi variants — clogging of the moving vanes by exhaust gases, or EGR/DPF fouling, is a well-documented cause of failure. On older wastegate engines (G9T, G9U, S9W), it is typically lubrication breakdown — degraded oil, a blocked oil circuit, or insufficient purge time after a hot engine shutdown — that cuts bearing life short. Whatever the engine, addressing the root cause before fitting a new turbo is essential to avoid a rapid repeat failure. All turbos listed here are sold new, as a straightforward sale, with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault Master Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Master Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
