2.3 dCi 100 hp or 180 hp: same M9T family, different turbos

The trap with this engine is very real: two vehicles both show '2.3 dCi', the same M9T family code, yet their turbos do not share the same manufacturer reference. The power difference between a 100 hp and a 180 hp unit is enough to point you towards entirely different references. But power output alone does not always settle the matter: a 125 hp version can correspond to several distinct M9T codes depending on the vehicle — Renault Master, Nissan NV400 or Nissan Interstar — and the configuration chosen by the manufacturer. It is the engine code stamped on the block, cross-referenced with the exact vehicle model, that allows the correct reference to be identified.

Precise M9T codes for the extreme power outputs, a grey area in the middle

Certain power outputs of the 2.3 dCi have precisely identified engine codes. The codes M9T670, M9T672, M9T676 and M9T870 appear under the 100–110–125 hp variants; the codes M9T706 and M9T716 appear under the 135–150–180 hp variants; the code M9T704 is specific to the 163 hp version, and the codes M9T 716 and M9T 726 cover the 136–150–179 hp range. For other power outputs, the code is listed as M9T without a suffix in the available data: in that case, the vehicle model and exact power output remain essential to narrow down the search.

Failure causes specific to intensive commercial vehicle use

The 2.3 dCi is fitted primarily to light commercial vehicles subjected to short cycles, heavy loads and frequent stops — all conditions that place considerable strain on turbo lubrication. The most common failures affect the bearings and seals, and are often the result of degraded oil or overdue service intervals. A blocked DPF or EGR can make matters worse by creating back-pressure that weakens the CHRA.
