On the Master 2.3 dCi, the stated power output alone is not enough to identify the correct turbo

A Master 2.3 dCi 150 can be fitted with several different turbo references depending on the exact engine code stamped on the block. Power output alone is not a reliable identifier: it is the combination of engine code and power range that determines the compatible OEM reference.

The M9T family covers all 2.3 dCi variants of the Master, but it breaks down into very different suffixes depending on the generation and power output. For example, the codes M9T670, M9T672, M9T676, M9T870 apply exclusively to the 100, 110 and 125 hp versions of a specific generation, whereas M9T706 et M9T716 are found on the 135, 150 and 180 hp versions of another. The code M9T704 is reserved solely for the 163 hp version. Mixing up these suffixes leads to ordering errors: two turbos that look alike can have different variable geometries and differently calibrated actuators.

Failure causes to be aware of before fitting

The 2.3 dCi in heavy commercial use — frequent cold starts, heavy loads, prolonged idling — places considerable strain on the turbo bearings. Degraded oil or a contaminated circuit accelerates CHRA wear and causes abnormal axial play, detectable by whistling and smoke under acceleration. A blocked diesel particulate filter regularly forces the turbo to operate in a degraded mode due to boost limitation. Before any replacement, it is essential to check the condition of the engine oil, the cleanliness of the turbo feed lines, and the exact root cause of the failure: fitting a new turbo without having addressed the source of the problem risks rapid failure of the new part.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Master 2.3 dCi Turbo?
