The 1.9 dCi is fitted to vehicles with very different uses, and that makes all the difference when ordering a turbo

A Renault Master or a loaded Trafic runs at sustained engine speeds on the motorway, often under thermal overload; a Scénic or a Mégane strings together short urban journeys, with incomplete warm-up cycles that encourage oil circuit fouling. These different operating conditions produce distinct failure modes — and turbo references that are not interchangeable, even at identical power outputs. On this engine, the range covered runs from 82 hp to 131 hp depending on the vehicle and engine code: that difference alone rules out any search by engine capacity alone.

Codes F9Q and D4192: why the engine code is the essential starting point

    The Renault 1.9 dCi is based primarily on the F9Q family, which spans a large number of distinct codes: F9Q 650, F9Q 664, F9Q 670, F9Q 674, F9Q 680, F9Q 718, F9Q 732, F9Q 733, F9Q 738, F9Q 740, F9Q 750, F9Q 752, F9Q 754, F9Q 758, F9Q 759, F9Q 760, F9Q 762, F9Q 800, F9Q 803, F9Q 804, F9Q 808, F9Q 812, F9Q 816, F9Q 818, F9Q 870, F9Q 872, as well as the code D4192T4 and D 4192 T3. The same power rating — 110 hp for example — can correspond to several different F9Q codes depending on the model (Scénic, Mégane, Laguna, Trafic, Master), and each code points to a specific manufacturer reference. Using the stated power output alone to select a turbo is a common mistake: two vehicles both listed at 110 hp may require different turbos depending on their engine code.

Causes of failure and precautions before refitting

On light commercial vehicles (Trafic, Master), the turbo is particularly vulnerable to damage from carbonised oil: extended oil change intervals and sustained load conditions accelerate wear on the CHRA bearings. On saloons and MPVs used mainly in urban driving, it is EGR and DPF fouling combined with frequent engine shut-offs after periods of load that weakens the seals. Common symptoms — abnormal whistling, blue or black smoke, a marked loss of power — indicate a turbo that needs inspecting, but do not always point to the turbo itself as the root cause. A foreign body drawn into the intake or an air leak on the induction circuit can produce the same signs. Identifying and correcting the original cause is essential before fitting any new turbo, otherwise the replacement unit may be damaged very quickly. All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.
