2.2 dCi: two engine families, YD22 on the Nissan side and G9T on the Renault side, with nothing in common when it comes to turbos

On the 2.2 dCi, the engine code is the first thing to check before searching for a turbo. The engine capacity is identical, but two architectures coexist: the YD22 family fitted to Nissan models (Almera, Almera Tino, Primera, X-Trail) and the G9T family developed by Renault and fitted to the Laguna, Espace, Vel Satis, Avantime, Trafic and Master. These two families share no turbo references whatsoever: working from the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable method.

YD22 codes: 90 hp, 125 hp, 136 hp or 139 hp — one prefix, multiple references

The codes YD22DDTi and YD22ED cover several power outputs: 90 hp, 125 hp, 136 hp and 139 hp depending on the vehicle and variant. The code alone is not always enough to pinpoint a single reference: the exact power output and the Nissan model in question remain essential confirmation details. The Nissan OEM reference (prefix 14411) may have several suffixes depending on the variant, and each suffix corresponds to a distinct turbo.

G9T codes: from 90 hp to 150 hp, a wide range spanning vans and saloons

The G9T family covers a much larger number of codes: G9T700, G9T702, G9T703, G9T706, G9T707, G9T712, G9T720, G9T722, G9T742, G9T743, G9T750. The codes G9T720, G9T722 and G9T750 are associated with the 90 hp versions (Trafic and Master in particular), while the codes G9T700, G9T702, G9T703 and their variants cover the 115 hp, 136 hp and 150 hp outputs on Renault passenger and light commercial models. A G9T706 or G9T707 identified on an Espace or a Vel Satis 150 hp will not take the same turbo as a G9T720 from a Trafic. The Renault reference (prefix 8200 or 7701) varies accordingly.

Failure causes to address before replacement

On this type of diesel engine, the turbo suffers primarily from insufficient lubrication — degraded oil, a blocked or clogged oil feed pipe — and from particle ingestion when the air filter is faulty. Common symptoms include an abnormal whistling noise, grey or black exhaust smoke, and a drop in boost pressure. On high-mileage vehicles (Trafic, Master), progressive fouling of the oil circuit is an aggravating factor. Identifying and correcting the root cause before fitting a new turbo is essential to the longevity of the part. All turbos offered in this collection are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.
