On the 1.9 dCi Mégane, the 5-speed and 6-speed gearboxes coexist across the same production years

Between 2002 and 2012, the 1.9 dCi was fitted with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual depending on the model generation and the exact engine code. Engine capacity alone does not determine which gearbox was originally fitted.

Four F9Q engine codes, two distinct gearbox families

The 1.9 dCi comes in four engine codes: F9Q800, F9Q803, F9Q870 and F9Q872. The gearboxes associated with these codes do not belong to the same mechanical family: references of the JC5 type correspond to 5-speed manuals, whilst references of the JC7 and ND4 type correspond to 6-speed manuals. The engine code stamped on the block remains the essential starting point for identifying the correct gearbox; confusing these families renders the part unusable.

Known weaknesses of the F9Q under heavy use

On high-mileage Mégane IIs, the F9Q paired with a 6-speed gearbox regularly suffers from difficult gear changes caused by wear to the 3rd and 4th gear synchronisers. On the 5-speed version, repeated torque loads in urban driving put greater strain on the differential. These two issues account for the vast majority of gearbox replacements recorded on this engine between 150,000 and 220,000 km.
