Tiguan 2007–2018: manual gearbox, DSG 6 or DSG 7 — which transmission type for which engine?

On the first-generation Tiguan, there is no single answer: depending on the engine, the customer will find either a 6-speed manual gearbox, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7, and these three families share neither their architecture nor their failure points. The 2.0 TDI is the only engine offered with both options — manual or DSG 7 — depending on the vehicle's specification and year. The 1.4 TSI is fitted exclusively with the DSG 6 (codes CAVA, CAX, CTHA), whilst the 1.5 TSI and the 2.0 TDI 4Motion are invariably paired with the DSG 7.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: two generations, two failure patterns

The DSG 6, fitted to the 1.4 TSI, is a wet-clutch gearbox with a reputation for robustness, though it is sensitive to the quality of oil changes. The DSG 7, fitted to the diesel variants (codes CBAB, CFFB, CFGB, CUVC, DFGA for the 2.0 TDI and 4Motion) as well as the 1.5 TSI (DADA, DPCA), is a dry-clutch unit: it is more susceptible to judder and premature clutch wear, particularly in heavy urban use. Both of these dual-clutch gearboxes are supplied without the mechatronic unit and with a new dual clutch, which is a decisive factor for long-term durability after replacement.

Identifying the correct gearbox for the diesel Tiguan

The 2.0 TDI accounts for the bulk of the catalogue, with five distinct engine codes spread across the 2007–2018 period. The engine code stamped on the block — visible without any dismantling — is the only reliable way to distinguish between generations and confirm which gearbox is associated with it. A Tiguan 2.0 TDI with a manual gearbox and a 2.0 TDI DSG 7 can be from the same year and appear to have the same power output, yet the transmission is entirely different. For the 4Motion, the DSG 7 configuration is the only one available, and the presence of the rear differential makes it essential to carry out an additional check of the drivetrain before any replacement is undertaken.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 31 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
