Five engine codes for the Tiguan 2.0 TDI: how the 2007–2018 generations reshuffled the gearboxes

Between 2007 and 2018, the Tiguan 2.0 TDI never offered a single, consistent gearbox throughout its production run. The first generation started with the engine code CBAB, followed by the CFFB and CFGB depending on power output and year of production, all paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. It was only with the engine codes CUVC and DFGA — introduced on the most recent model years — that the DSG 7 became a fully-fledged option. The same "2.0 TDI" badge can therefore conceal entirely different mechanical configurations.

6-speed manual or DSG 7: what the engine code determines

The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to identify which of the two gearbox families applies to this range. The DSG 7 supplied here is provided without the mechatronic unit, as this electrohydraulic module is handled separately and must be assessed independently. For manual versions, particular care is needed with transition model years: certain Tiguans produced between 2010 and 2012 may have been fitted with gearboxes carrying a different reference depending on the assembly plant, making the engine code — rather than the model year alone — essential to avoid ordering errors.

Documented weak points on these transmissions

The dry-clutch DSG 7 (DQ200), fitted to certain CUVC variants, has been known to exhibit erratic behaviour at low speed and juddering on pull-away, often linked to the mechatronic unit or the clutches. The 6-speed manual paired with the CBAB and CFFB blocks is generally regarded as robust, though the differential bearings can show premature wear on 4Motion Tiguans used regularly off-road or for towing.
