Reconditioned Volkswagen Sharan Gearbox

Sharan: three engines, three different gearbox configurations

The Sharan spans 1995 to 2022 and is available with three engines — 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI and 1.8 TSI — none of which share a gearbox. Engine capacity alone is therefore not enough to identify the correct unit: you need to cross-reference the engine, its code and the vehicle's year of first registration.

1.9 TDI: seven engine codes, a single family of 6-speed manual gearbox

The 1.9 TDI is the oldest engine in the Sharan range, available from 1995. It encompasses seven distinct codes — AFN, AHU, ANU, ASZ, AUY, BTB, BVK — all of which correspond to a 6-speed manual gearbox, but the ratios and mechanical couplings vary between series. An incorrectly identified code can lead to ordering a gearbox that is geometrically similar but incompatible at the point of fitting.

2.0 TDI: 6-speed manual or DSG 6 depending on the vehicle's specification

The Sharan's 2.0 TDI (2010–2022) carries the codes CFFA, CFFB, CFFE or CFGB. It is the only Sharan engine available with two transmission types: 6-speed manual or DSG 6. The DSG 6 is supplied with a new dual-clutch, without the mechatronic unit. For vehicles whose gearbox is beyond repair in its current condition, the available purchase method is exchange.

1.8 TSI: a single code CDAA, a 5-speed manual gearbox

The 1.8 TSI, fitted from 2010 to 2015 under the code CDAA, is paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox — a configuration specific to this petrol engine, distinct from the 6-speed manuals fitted to the diesel variants. It is the most straightforward identification point in the range: one code, one gearbox type.
