Fox 2005–2011: a single 5-speed manual gearbox, but references that vary by engine code

Throughout the entire production run of the Volkswagen Fox in France, from 2005 to 2011, the transmission remained exclusively a 5-speed manual, on both the 1.2 petrol and the 1.4 TDI. The absence of an automatic or automated manual version simplifies the picture — but does not eliminate the pitfalls of identification. Behind an identical name, references differ according to the engine code stamped on the block: BMD, CHFB, AMF and BNM do not systematically share the same gearbox, and references such as LVG, LVC, LUX, LUK, LNR, JUS, JUR, JPU, JJL or JHN are not interchangeable without prior verification.

1.2 or 1.4 TDI: what the difference means in practice

The 1.2 accounts for the bulk of units available for reconditioning, which translates into a wider choice of references and generally shorter lead times. The 1.4 TDI (engine codes AMF and BNM) is considerably rarer: fewer vehicles in circulation, fewer gearboxes recovered at end of life, and more limited stock. It is precisely in this situation — a gearbox that is difficult to source or a reference unavailable in stock — that rebuilding the customer's original unit can be a viable alternative, provided the casing and structural components are in a sufficient condition to be reconditioned. For the 1.2, the exchange gearbox remains the standard route.

Identifying the correct reference before ordering

The engine code is the only reliable starting point. The production year alone is not enough: a 2008 Fox may carry a BMD or a CHFB code depending on the configuration, with non-interchangeable gearboxes. Also check the marking stamped on the gearbox casing itself, visible after partial dismantling, to confirm the exact reference before placing any order.
