Fox 2005–2011: a 5-speed manual gearbox across both ranges, but two engine code families not to be confused

Throughout its entire commercial life in France, the Volkswagen Fox was fitted with only a 5-speed manual gearbox, in both petrol and diesel form. This simplifies the search for parts, but it does not remove the need for precise identification: gearbox references vary according to the engine, and within the 1.2, according to the engine code stamped on the block. The sales method available on this collection is exchange.

1.2 and 1.4 TDI: same gearbox architecture, different references

The 1.2 petrol covers engine codes BMD and CHFB, which do not share the same gearbox references. The 1.4 TDI covers engine codes AMF and BNM. Mixing up these two engines — or overlooking the engine code within the 1.2 — will result in ordering the wrong part. The reference examples featured in this collection (LVG, LVC, LUX, LUK, LNR, JUS, JUR, JPU, JJL, JHN) illustrate this variety: a single generic designation covers several physical references that are not interchangeable.

When rebuilding your own gearbox may be the better option

Fox production ended in 2011, and the volume of parts in circulation is gradually shrinking. For the 1.4 TDI in particular, where the collection is more limited, the availability of an exchange gearbox can vary depending on the time of year. In this context, if the owner has a gearbox with a sound casing and a confirmed identification, having their own unit rebuilt — reconditioned and returned by the workshop — is a sound alternative that is independent of stock availability. This option is not always necessary for the 1.2, where the range of available references remains significantly broader.
