With the Jetta, choosing a reconditioned engine starts with a straightforward question: is the original unit still in a recoverable condition? If the original engine is too badly damaged — seized, cracked block, bores beyond tolerance — exchange is the only option available here. The rebuilding of your own unit is not offered in this collection, which sets the approach from the outset: you receive a reconditioned engine to replace the old one, which must be returned.

Three engine families, codes that never overlap

The 12 engine codes in this collection are divided strictly between three families: five codes for the 2.0 TDI (CKFC, CRBC, CRMB, CUNA, CUPA), five for the 1.4 TSI (CAVA, CAVB, CAVC, CAVD, CXSA), and two for the 2.0 TSI (AXX, CCZA). Each code corresponds to a specific variant — power output, model year, market — and none is interchangeable between families. On the diesel side, the coexistence of five codes between 2010 and 2018 reflects successive changes to the timing system and thermal management; confusing a CRBC with a CUNA means ordering an incompatible part. The same logic applies to the TSI: a CAVA and a CXSA share the same engine capacity, but not the same internal architecture.

Check the engine code before anything else

On the Jetta, the engine capacity shown at the counter is not enough to identify the unit. The year of manufacture narrows the search, but it is the code stamped on the block — typically visible on the lower part of the casing on the gearbox side — that removes all doubt. This four-letter code is the only reliable criterion for confirming that the engine on offer is an exact match for the original, both in terms of torque settings and compatibility with the on-board electronics.
