Twenty-three engine codes on the diesel Transporter: why so many units end up failing

The Transporter is a working vehicle — often heavily loaded and often run beyond its service intervals. This reality of day-to-day use leads to recurring failures that vary by engine family. On T4 generations (1992–2003), the naturally aspirated 2.4 D (AAB) and 1.9 TD (ABL) diesels fail primarily through classic mechanical wear — piston rings, liners and bearings — after high mileages. On the 1.9 TDI T5 (AXB, AXC, BRR), oil pressure problems and turbo failures caused by infrequent oil changes are well documented. The 2.5 TDI (ACV, AJT, AXD, AXG, BNZ), the five-cylinder unit fitted to the late T4 and early T5, is known for cylinder head cracks and head gasket failures in certain configurations. On the 2.0 TDI fitted to the T5 and T6 (twelve distinct codes from CAAA to CXHB), timing system failures and seizures caused by sludge build-up in the lubrication circuit are the most common reasons for complete engine replacement.

Five engine families across very different generations

The range covers the entire diesel Transporter from 1992 to 2019, spanning five distinct engine families. The 2.4 D and 1.9 TD belong to the first-generation T4 and use indirect injection. The 2.5 TDI was fitted to the T4 from 1996 onwards and to the early T5. The 1.9 TDI covers part of the T5 range. The 2.0 TDI, the most widely represented engine with twelve engine codes, accounts for the bulk of the T5 and the entire T6 — two vehicle generations that share no common block, which explains the wide variety of codes. Identifying your engine code precisely — stamped on the block or listed on the vehicle registration document — is essential before placing any order, as engines of the same capacity can correspond to physically incompatible blocks.

Two reconditioning options available

Depending on the codes available, the bare engine can be supplied on an exchange basis or via a rebuild of your own unit, whereby your block is received, reconditioned and then returned to you. This second option may be the right choice when your engine has suffered only partial failure and continuity of your serial number or administrative records is important. All blocks offered are bare engines: ancillaries, turbo, alternator and other accessories are not included.
