22 engine codes across the Transporter T4 to T6: why precise identification is essential before any replacement

On the Volkswagen Transporter, engine failures follow well-documented patterns depending on the generation and engine capacity. The 2.5 TDI (codes ACV, AJT, AXD, BNZ among others) is well known for cylinder head cracks and clogged EGR valve issues — classic symptoms include overheating, persistent blue smoke and a gradual loss of power. The 2.0 TDI found in the T5 and T6 generations (CFCA, CAAC, CCHA, CXFA and around ten other codes) suffers from premature timing gear wear and oil pressure problems on certain model years, which manifest as a dull knocking noise on start-up or an intermittent oil warning light. When these symptoms appear on a high-mileage commercial vehicle, replacing the engine block entirely is often unavoidable rather than attempting a partial repair.

Five engine capacities, 22 engine codes: identification allows no room for guesswork

The collection covers five diesel engines — 1.9 TD, 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI, 2.4 TDI and 2.5 TDI — produced from 1992 to 2019. Within this range alone, 22 distinct engine codes are listed. The same 2.0 TDI can correspond to very different architectures depending on whether it is fitted to a T5 phase 1 (AXB, AXC, AXG) or a later T5/T6 phase (CFCA, CAAC, CXHA, CXHB, CXGA, CXGB…). These blocks are not interchangeable. The engine code stamped on the block — not simply the engine capacity or the first registration date — is the reference data needed to select the correct bare engine.

Two supply options available depending on the condition of your original block

Depending on the condition of the faulty block, two options are available: supply of a reconditioned bare engine on an exchange basis, or rebuilding the block you send in yourself, which is then returned to you. This second option applies to engine codes for which a replacement unit is hard to source, or where the customer wishes to retain their own serial number. In both cases, the engine is supplied as a bare engine: ancillaries, peripherals and turbo are not included and must be transferred from the old block.
