22 engine codes cover the diesel Transporter from 1992 to 2019: why failures don't always occur where you'd expect

On the Transporter, engine failures follow well-documented patterns depending on the generation and engine capacity. The 2.5 TDI (T5, 2003–2009) has a long-standing history of crankshaft issues and connecting-rod failures, often preceded by dull knocking noises when cold or a drop in oil pressure. The 2.0 TDI found in the facelifted T5 and T6 generations has known issues with the timing system and cylinder head, with symptoms that vary by engine code: hot smoke, abnormal oil consumption, and in advanced cases coolant loss caused by a cracked cylinder head. These differences mean that replacing the bare engine block can never be done on the basis of engine capacity alone.

Five diesel engines, each with very different identification logic

The range covers five engines: 1.9 TD, 2.4 D, 2.5 TDI, 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI. The 1.9 TD and 2.4 D — two diesels from the T4 generation (1990s and early 2000s) — have few codes: just one for the 1.9 TD (ABL), and two for the 2.4 D (AAB, AAB320126). The 2.5 TDI bridges the T4 (ACV, AJT, AXG) and the T5 (AXD, BNZ), whilst the 1.9 TDI belongs exclusively to the T5 (AXB, AXC, BRR). At the other end of the scale, the 2.0 TDI fitted to the facelifted T5 and T6 encompasses eleven distinct codes (CAAA, CAAB, CAAC, CCHA, CFCA, CXEB, CXFA, CXGA, CXGB, CXHA, CXHB). Power output, year of manufacture or body generation alone are not sufficient to identify the correct block: the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable criterion for selecting the right reference.

Two purchasing options depending on the condition of your original unit

Depending on the condition of the removed engine, two options are available: replacement with a reconditioned block from stock, or rebuilding the customer's own engine, which is then returned to them. This second option may be the right choice when the original block has a known history or specific characteristics worth preserving. All engines offered are bare engines: ancillary components (turbo, injectors, alternator, etc.) are not included and must be reused or replaced separately when refitting.
