Same 2.0 TDI, eleven different engine codes: the T5 and T6 do not share the same blocks

On the Transporter 2.0 TDI, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct bare engine. Between 2009 and 2019, Volkswagen offered this engine in eleven distinct codes — from CAAA to CXFA, taking in CFCA, CAAC, CCHA, CXEB, CXHB, CXHA, CXGB, CXGA and CAAB — spread across two generations of Transporter. A block from a T5 Phase 2 cannot be substituted for one from a T6, even at the same power output: cylinder head architecture, cooling circuit and ancillaries all differ depending on the generation.

Why the engine code is the only valid starting point

The stated power output (102, 140 or 180 hp depending on the variant) is not specific enough: several codes share the same power figure across different years, with internally incompatible variants. The engine code, stamped on the block on the timing side, is the only piece of information that removes all ambiguity. The date of first registration can help cross-reference, but it is no substitute for the code — particularly on vehicles whose engine has been replaced during their lifetime.

Known weak points on this engine family

The chain-driven 2.0 TDI engines (EA288 family, T6) are prone to premature chain stretch, often indicated by a rattling noise on cold start. The belt-driven blocks (EA189 family, T5) have documented cases of cylinder head cracking on versions subjected to heavy thermal stress — intensive commercial use, frequent overloading. In both cases, a diagnosis must confirm that the bottom end is sound before any decision is made on which type of part to order.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a engine for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 11 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right engine for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old engine (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the engine for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
