Volkswagen Passat Engines: 2005 to 2015 – Two Engine Families with Very Different Identification Logic

Between 2005 and 2015, the Passat spans two generations (B6 then B7) and offers six engine variants split between petrol and diesel. On the petrol side, the 1.4 TSI, 1.6, 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI units belong to either the EA111 or EA888 family depending on power output and production period; on the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (PD family, unit injectors) and the 2.0 TDI (EA189 family) follow radically different architectures. These two diesel families share no components whatsoever, and their engine codes are unambiguous: BMR, BMP, BRU, BSU, BSW for the 1.9 TDI; CDAA, CHHB, CHHA, CCZA for the 2.0 TDI.

Diesel: Two Generations of TDI Not to Be Confused

The 1.9 TDI with unit injectors (codes BRU, BSU, BSW, BMP, BMR) was fitted to the Passat B6 until it was gradually phased out; it is well known for cylinder head and glow plug failures on heavily used examples. The 2.0 TDI common rail (CDAA, CHHB, CHHA, CCZA) took over and has its own known weaknesses: the dual-mass flywheel and EGR valve are common points to watch. A reconditioned bare engine is always supplied without ancillaries – the turbo, injection pump, intercooler and accessories remain those of the original vehicle.

Petrol: The Engine Code – the Only Reliable Reference Between the 1.6 and TSI Units

The naturally aspirated 1.6 (codes AVQ, BXJ, BSF, BSE, BGU) shares no architecture with the direct-injection turbocharged TSI units. Across the 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI (CZDA) and 2.0 TSI, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the exact unit: two Passat 2.0 TSI models from different model years may carry engines from entirely different generations. Checking the engine code stamped on the block – rather than relying solely on the V5C registration document – is essential before placing any order. The fifteen engine codes listed in this collection (CDAA, CHHB, CHHA, CCZA, BMR, BMP, AVQ, BXJ, BSW, BSU, BRU, BSF, BSE, BGU, CZDA) allow for unambiguous identification.
