The 2.5 TDI in the Crafter suffers piston failures; the 2.0 TDI wears its crankshaft bearings under load

These two faults are the most well-documented on diesel Crafter models from 2006 to 2016. On the 2.5 TDI (codes BJK and BJL), piston cracking and ring failures often appear from as early as 250,000 km in heavy use, accompanied by persistent blue smoke and a gradual loss of power. On the 2.0 TDI, a much broader family here with nine references covering codes DASC, DNAE, DAUA, CKUB, DAVA, CSLC, CKTC, CKTB and CLSA, abnormal oil consumption and low-speed rumbling at idle frequently point to crankshaft bearing wear, accelerated by the stop-and-go cycles typical of urban vans or long motorway runs at maximum load. In both cases, diagnosis regularly leads to a complete block replacement rather than a partial repair.

Two engine code families — blocks that cannot be swapped between them

The most common source of confusion when replacing these engines is correctly identifying the engine code stamped on the block — essential on the 2.0 TDI given the sheer number of variants. Available outputs range from 109 to 163 hp depending on the code, and internal dimensions differ from one version to another: fitting a CKUB in place of a CSLC, for example, creates both mechanical and electronic compatibility issues. The 2.5 TDI is more straightforward with its two codes BJK and BJL, but confusion with blocks from the same-capacity Transporter T5 is possible; the installation configurations differ between the two vehicles. Checking the stamped code remains the only reliable method before placing any order.
