Volkswagen Polo Engine: from the 1.2 naturally aspirated to the 1.4 TSI, two decades of units to tell apart

Between 2001 and 2017, the Polo spanned several generations and housed fundamentally different engine families. On one side, the petrol versions cover two distinct architectures: the 1.2 naturally aspirated (engine codes BME, CGPA, CGPB, CJZC, CJZD, among others) and the 1.2 TSI then 1.4 TSI with turbocharged direct injection (codes CBZA, CBZB, CBZC, CZDA, CAVE, CUSB, CHPB…). On the other, the diesel range comes down to the 1.4 TDI (codes BNM, BNV). These families share no architecture, no ancillaries, and no cross-compatibility.

1.2 naturally aspirated and 1.4 TDI: the units from before the TSI switch

The 1.2 naturally aspirated, fitted to the Polo IV and early Polo V, is a three-cylinder recognisable by its sound and its tendency to suffer valve guide wear at high mileage. The 1.4 TDI is a three-cylinder diesel with a mechanical unit injector system; its well-known weaknesses lie in the injectors and the timing system, but it is the engine code stamped on the block that determines the exact reference for the reconditioned unit — not the engine capacity alone.

1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI: identifying the exact code before placing an order

The TSI units make up the bulk of the catalogue, with fourteen engine codes listed. The 1.2 TSI evolved through several power variants on the Polo V (2009–2017); a single 1.2 TSI designation can correspond to codes as different as CBZA, CBZB or CZDA, each tied to a specific map, cylinder head or timing configuration. The 1.4 TSI (codes CAVE, CUSB, CHPB) is fitted to the sportier or higher-specification versions and features a more complex design. In every case, the engine is sold as a bare engine: ancillaries, turbo, alternator and accessories are not included and should be reused from the old unit.
