Petrol or diesel: which engine for your Golf?

The Golf covered here spans from 1997 to 2020 and nine distinct engine variants, split between two clearly separate families. On the petrol side: 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.6, 1.8 TSI, 2.0 TSI, 2.0 TFSI. On the diesel side: 1.6 TDI, 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI. The petrol/diesel distinction is the first filter, but it is not enough on its own: at the same engine capacity, several engine codes can coexist depending on the generation and power output, and these engines are not interchangeable.

Engine codes: why engine capacity alone is not enough

The 1.4 TSI is a good illustration of the issue: it encompasses codes such as CAXA, CJZA, CHHB, CUNA and BLG, which correspond to different architectures and power outputs (from 85 hp to 140 hp depending on the variant). The same logic applies to the 2.0 TDI, which brings together codes such as CBDA, CBDB, CRMB, CRBC, each tied to a specific generation of injection system and cylinder head. On the 1.9 TDI, codes AHF, BKC and BMM refer to engines of different design despite sharing the same engine capacity. Identifying the engine code stamped on the block — usually visible at the top of the sump — is therefore essential before placing any order.

Known weak points by engine family

TSI engines with a timing chain (1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI in EA111 and EA211 generations) are well known for premature wear of the chain and tensioner, which can cause misfires and a drop in compression before complete engine failure. The 2.0 TDI engines from the EA189 generation (notably codes CBDA and CBDB) are prone to dual-mass flywheel problems and EGR valve faults, which accelerate carbon build-up and can lead to internal engine damage. The 1.9 TDI (EA188), on the other hand, has a reputation for reliability but remains susceptible to head gasket leaks at high mileage. These symptoms — abnormal oil consumption, blue smoke, and a marked loss of power — are generally a sign of internal wear requiring replacement of the bare engine.
