11 engine codes for the Golf 1.4 TSI: 14 years of technical evolution between 2006 and 2020

The 2006–2020 period spans several generations of Golf and, with them, a succession of 1.4 TSI engines that differ profoundly from one another. The first codes — BMY and BLG — appeared on the Golf V from 2006 onwards, featuring first-generation TSI technology with a supercharger paired with a turbo. From 2008–2009, the Golf VI introduced the codes CAXA and CDAA, which dropped the supercharger in favour of a turbo alone, with a revised internal architecture. The Golf VII (2012) marked another significant break with the codes CAWB, CAXC, CAVD, CAVB and later CZDA, CXSA, CHPB on the facelifted Golf VII and the Golf VIII.

Why the engine code takes precedence over any other indication

Two Golfs from the same year with the same quoted power output can receive incompatible engines depending on the market variant or specification. The four-letter code, visible on the engine block itself, is the only piece of information that guarantees an exact match. TSI engines with a supercharger (BMY, BLG) and turbo-only TSI engines (CAXA and later codes) share neither cylinder head nor interface ancillaries, which rules out any cross-replacement between families.

Known weak points by engine family

The early twin-charged TSI engines (BMY, BLG) are well known for premature timing chain wear and oil consumption issues related to the piston rings. The CAXA and CDAA codes inherited the same timing chain problems. From CZDA onwards, the chain was revised and the engine incorporates a Miller cycle, noticeably altering its thermal behaviour. These structural differences have a direct bearing on the choice of replacement engine.
