Five codes exist for this engine: AVQ, BXJ, BSW, BSU and BRU, corresponding to different power outputs and production periods — they are not interchangeable.

The engine code is stamped directly on the block and is the only reliable means of identification before selecting a part. A Passat 1.9 TDI 130 hp does not carry the same block as a 100 hp or 105 hp version, even within the same generation.
