Transporter 2.0 TDI: eight engine codes between 2009 and 2019, but how many different gearboxes?

This is the classic pitfall on the T5 and T6 fitted with the 2.0 TDI: the engine capacity is identical, but the engine codes CAAA, CAAB, CAAC, CFCA, CXFA, CXGA, CXHA and DJKA do not all use the same transmission. Depending on the power output, year of manufacture and vehicle variant, there are three distinct families: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and DSG 7. Mixing up these families means the part will be incompatible from the moment it is fitted.

5-speed manual, 6-speed manual or DSG 7: what the engine code actually determines

Entry-level or earlier versions of the T5 2.0 TDI come with the 5-speed manual, whilst higher-torque variants or T6 model years point towards the 6-speed. The DSG 7 is reserved for specific power/application combinations. The engine code stamped on the identification plate of the unit is the only reliable piece of information for identifying the correct family: two vehicles of the same year and the same stated power output can have different codes and therefore incompatible gearboxes.

DSG 7 in a light commercial vehicle: a technical point worth knowing

In the Transporter, the DSG 7 operates under variable load conditions and frequent starts, which places greater demand on the internal management module. The DSG 7 gearbox is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch. This is a structural point: the original mechatronic unit, if faulty, requires a separate diagnosis and is not part of the reconditioned unit.
