The Volkswagen Polo 1.2 petrol is first and foremost a city car: repeated starts, a clutch under constant strain in heavy traffic, and often high mileages despite its urban purpose. Five engine codes for the same engine capacity: the identification pitfall

The uniformity of the transmission conceals genuine variety on the engine side: the codes AZQ, BMD, BZG, CGPA and CGPB follow one another between 2001 and 2014, with internal revisions that affect gearbox compatibility. Two vehicles showing the same 1.2 engine capacity and the same model year may carry different codes depending on the production line; the associated gearbox is not necessarily identical. Checking the engine code stamped on the block — rather than the registration year alone — is the only way to avoid a reference error.

Known weaknesses of the 1.2 in urban use

On the older codes (AZQ, BMD), the timing chain is a well-documented concern: a failing chain can transmit vibrations and juddering that may be mistaken for a gearbox fault. Before any transmission replacement, confirming that the symptom genuinely originates from the gearbox rather than the engine will avoid unnecessary expenditure. On the CGPA and CGPB codes, which appeared towards the end of production, the internal mechanics of the gearbox were slightly revised; a reference sourced from an AZQ unit is not compatible without prior verification.
