Polo 1.6 TDI from 2009 to 2017: CAYB and CAYC do not take the same gearbox

Two engine codes exist for this diesel unit: CAYB and CAYC. The CAYB corresponds to the 75 hp version, the CAYC to the 90 hp version. This distinction is critical: depending on the code stamped on the engine, the paired gearbox is different, and the parts are not interchangeable between the two. Checking this code before placing any order avoids a misidentification that neither the engine capacity nor the year alone can prevent.

5-speed manual or 7-speed DSG: two transmissions, two use cases

The 1.6 TDI Polo was offered with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG with dry dual-clutch (DQ200). The manual gearbox was fitted to the vast majority of vehicles produced during the 2009–2017 window. The 7-speed DSG remains a minority fitment but is present, mainly on higher trim levels. The DQ200 is known for juddering during slow urban driving in its early production years — behaviour linked to its mechatronic unit and dry dual-clutch, both of which are separate from the mechanical gearbox itself. The DSG gearbox offered here is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch included.
