Crafter 2.5 TDI: five distinct engine codes before the switch to the 2.0 TDI

On the Crafter 2.5 TDI, engine capacity tells you nothing about which gearbox to order. Five engine codes coexist — BJJ, BJK, BJL, BJM and CECA — and they are not all paired with the same transmission. References HQT, HQU, HQV, HQW and HRF correspond to precise pairings between engine code and gearbox type: using only the year or the power output as a criterion is enough to order an incompatible part.

6-speed manual or Shiftmatic: two architectures, one engine

The 2.5 TDI Crafter was produced with a 6-speed manual gearbox and with the Shiftmatic, an automated manual gearbox with electrohydraulic control. These two architectures are not interchangeable: the casing, mounting points and electronic interface all differ. The Shiftmatic is supplied without its automated actuator, in line with the reconditioning principle for this family.

The engine code: the only reliable reference for this engine

With five engine codes for a single engine capacity, checking is essential before placing any order. The code is stamped directly on the block and also appears on the V5C logbook of certain vehicles. A Crafter carrying the code CECA does not take the same gearbox as one fitted with a BJL or a BJK, even where the power output is identical.
