Caddy 1.9 TDI (2004–2010): 5 or 6 speeds — two gearboxes for two engine codes, which one is yours?

On the Caddy 1.9 TDI produced between 2004 and 2010, two configurations exist side by side: a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed manual, allocated according to the engine code. The engine code — BJB or BLS — stamped on the block is the essential starting point, as the year alone is not enough to distinguish between the two families.

BJB and BLS: different profiles, different gearboxes

The BJB (105 hp, available from 2004) is generally paired with the 5-speed gearbox, whilst the BLS (105 hp, introduced from 2006 with improved exhaust gas recirculation) may be fitted with the 6-speed depending on the vehicle's configuration. Mixing up the two families leads to bell housing or final drive ratio incompatibility: the references GQN, JCY, LFZ, LBS, KRY, JCS, GQR cover the full range, but each one corresponds to a specific engine code / number of speeds pairing.

    Commercial use and gearbox stress

The Caddy 1.9 TDI is frequently used as a light commercial vehicle carrying regular loads, which accelerates synchromesh wear — particularly on 2nd and 3rd gear in the 5-speed. The most common symptoms before complete failure are difficulty selecting gears when cold and a crunching noise when downshifting under load. The 6-speed, less common on this engine, shows more reported issues related to the differential in mixed urban/A-road use at high mileage.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 7 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
