From the naturally aspirated 1.9 TD of the early years to the 1.4 TSI from 2008 onwards: two eras, two turbo philosophies on the Ibiza

The history of the turbo on the Ibiza falls into two clearly distinct periods. The AAZ engine (1.9 TD 75 hp) belongs to the generation of fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate and no electronic boost control. From the first TDI variants — engine codes ATD, AXR, BMT on the 1.9 TDI 100, then AMF, BAY, BHC, BMS, BNM, BNV, BWB on the 1.4 TDI 70 and 80 hp — variable geometry became the diesel standard, with either a pneumatic or electronic actuator depending on the reference. The 1.9 TDI 105 (BJB, BLS) and the 1.9 TDI 160 (BPX, BUK) follow the same logic with higher boost pressures. On the petrol side, the 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC) and the 1.4 TSI (CHPA, CHPB, CPTA, CUKB, CZDA, CZEA) represent a complete break: small fixed-geometry turbos, compact transverse mounting, and increased sensitivity to oil quality.

Identifying the correct generation before ordering

There are several identification pitfalls worth bearing in mind. Engine code ATD and engine code AXR appear on both the 1.9 TDI 100 hp and the 1.9 TDI 100: the manufacturer's turbo reference can differ depending on the vehicle generation, even when the engine code is identical. On the 1.4 TSI, six codes coexist (CHPA, CHPB, CPTA, CUKB, CZDA, CZEA) across two power outputs — 140 and 150 hp — and the turbo references are not necessarily interchangeable between these codes. Checking the engine code stamped on the block, rather than the engine capacity alone, is essential before placing any order.

Failure causes: what differs depending on the engine

On variable-geometry diesel engines (1.4 TDI and 1.9 TDI), clogged turbine vanes and a seized actuator are the most common causes of failure, often made worse by a blocked diesel particulate filter or a fouled EGR circuit. On the small TSI petrol engines, the weak points are primarily the bearings and oil seal integrity, directly linked to missed oil change intervals or insufficient warm-up before hard use. In every case, addressing the underlying mechanical or maintenance issue before fitting is what determines how long the new part will last. All turbos listed here are new parts.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT Ibiza Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT Ibiza Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
