7 engine codes, 100% diesel: what this means for the turbo geometry on the Ibiza 1.9 TDI

The Ibiza 1.9 TDI range covers a single fuel type — diesel — spread across four power outputs: 100, 100 hp, 105 and 160. This focus on the TDI is significant: depending on the power output, the turbo uses either a variable geometry (movable vanes controlled by an actuator) or a fixed geometry with wastegate. The thermal stresses and lubrication cycles differ considerably between these two designs, and ordering the wrong one leads to a direct incompatibility.

Six engine codes for the 100–105 hp, two for the 160

The 100 and 100 hp versions share the codes ATD and AXR, with the addition of BMT on the 1.9 TDI 100 only. The 1.9 TDI 105 corresponds to codes BJB and BLS. The more powerful 160, with its variable geometry, is distinguished by codes BPX and BUK: these two codes are not compatible with any reference from the lower-output versions. Checking the code stamped on the engine block remains the only reliable way to avoid a fitting error.

Causes of failure to address before replacement

On these 1.9 TDI engines, oil circuit fouling and lubrication degradation are the primary causes of turbo bearing wear. EGR or DPF fouling can also introduce foreign particles into the intake. Persistent blue smoke, a whistling noise under acceleration, or power loss under load are the characteristic symptoms. Fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause will consistently result in another premature failure.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SEAT Ibiza 1.9 TDI Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SEAT Ibiza 1.9 TDI Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
