8 BMW models, two transfer families: mechanical or electronic xDrive – the difference matters

On BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive models, the transfer case can be controlled mechanically or electronically depending on the model and generation. This is no minor detail: units of the type ATC300, ATC350 or ATC45L do not respond to the same inputs and are not fitted to the same vehicles, even when the engine is identical. A 2004 X5 3.0d and a 2013 X5 3.0d do not share the same transfer case, because BMW revised the xDrive architecture across the E53, E70 and F15 generations.

Diesel and petrol: engine codes that span several models

The range covers 3.0d, 3.0i and 2.0d engines fitted to vehicles produced between 1999 and 2021. On the diesel side, the M57D30, N57D30 and B57D30 families follow one another without being interchangeable: the M57D30 itself comes in several variants (306D1, 306D2, 306D3, 306D5) found across different generations of the 3 Series, 5 Series and X5. On the petrol side, the M54B30, N52B30, N55B30A and B58B30A blocks cover distinct periods; a change in engine code often coincides with a change in transfer case. For the 2.0d, the codes M47D20, N47D20 and B47D20 appear on the X4, 4 Series and 3 Series — three models that do not necessarily share the same unit despite the common engine.

The identification pitfall: model, generation and engine code together

The model alone is not enough to identify the compatible reconditioned transfer case. The X5 alone accounts for four distinct references in this catalogue, the X6 for two. The reference of the unit currently fitted — ATC35L, ATC500, ATC700 or otherwise — remains the most reliable starting point, even before the engine code. Where this reference is unavailable, the combination of model + generation + full engine code is essential to make the right choice without risk of error.
