Why do turbos fail so often on the Audi A1's small TFSI and TDI engines?

On the Audi A1, turbo failures affect small-capacity, hard-worked engines first and foremost. The 1.2 TFSI units (engine codes CBZA, CBZB, CBZC) and 1.4 TFSI are well known for borderline cold-start lubrication: hot starts followed by an immediate switch-off rapidly degrade the CHRA bearings. Characteristic symptoms include a sharp whistling noise under acceleration, persistent blue smoke on start-up, and a gradual loss of power accompanied by the engine entering limp mode. On diesel variants, the 1.6 TDI (CAYB, CAYC) is prone to frequent clogging caused by EGR gas recirculation and a blocked DPF, which deprives the variable-geometry turbo of its actuator travel. The result is a stuck geometry, a turbo that can no longer regulate boost pressure, and a marked loss of low-rev torque.

Address the root cause first: what replacement alone won't fix

Fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause of the original failure will inevitably lead to another breakdown. On TFSI engines, checking oil quality and level, the turbo feed pipe, and the pressure relief valve is essential. On TDI engines, cleaning the EGR circuit and checking the condition of the DPF before reassembly is non-negotiable. A foreign object drawn in through the intake, or an air leak upstream of the compressor, is enough to destroy a new turbo within a few hundred kilometres.

Choosing the right reference for your engine code

The A1 spans several generations with distinct engine architectures at the same displacement. A 1.4 TFSI 122 hp (CAXA, CNVA) does not share the same turbo reference as a 1.4 TFSI 125 hp (CZCA), nor as a 1.4 TFSI 140 or 150 hp (CHPA, CHPB, CPTA, CZDA, CZEA), nor as a 1.4 TFSI 185 hp (CAVG, CTHG, CTJA). On the diesel side, the 1.4 TDI is available in three power outputs (75, 90 and 105 hp) with engine codes CUSA, CUSB, CYZB which may overlap depending on the variant, while the 1.4 TDI 90 hp adds the codes CUTA and CYZA. The engine code stamped on the block — and not simply the stated power output — is the only reliable criterion for selecting the correct manufacturer reference. All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A1 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A1 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
