1.4 TFSI: before and after the first bearing failures, the manufacturer's reference is no longer the same

On the VAG group's 1.4 TFSI, the turbo has historically been one of the first components to fail. The most well-documented weak point remains the deterioration of the CHRA bearings: when the engine oil is changed too late or the turbo's oil supply circuit becomes partially blocked, the bearings wear prematurely. The characteristic symptoms are a cold-start whistling noise under acceleration, persistent blue smoke from the exhaust, and a loss of power that the driver notices from mid-range revs onwards. This issue directly influenced how manufacturer references evolved across successive engine code generations: the turbos for engine codes CAXA, CAXC, CMSA, CMSB or CNVA do not share the same references as those for more recent codes such as CZEA, CZDA, CZCA or CVNA. Before any replacement, the root cause of the failure — contamination, an air leak on the oil supply hose, or a faulty seal — must be addressed; otherwise the new turbo will be exposed to the same conditions.

Why the engine code is the only reliable identifier for this unit

The 1.4 TFSI covers a wide power range — from 122 hp to 185 hp — and the vehicles concerned span from the Audi A1 to the Audi Q3, including the Audi A3 and Audi A4. At the same power output, two different vehicles or two different model years may use turbos with very different manufacturer references. The engine code stamped on the block therefore remains the only reliable starting point: the codes CAVG, CTHG and CTJA correspond to the 185 hp version and point to specific references that have no direct relation to those for the 122 or 125 hp codes. Likewise, the codes CHPA, CHPB, CPTA and CZDA appear in listings covering both 1.4 TFSI and 1.4 TSI engines: the engine capacity or power output shown on the registration document alone is not sufficient to determine the correct reference. All turbos offered in this collection are new turbos, sold without any part exchange.
