Does an SUV the size of a Q5 put more strain on its turbo than a saloon?

The answer is yes, and that is often what lies behind the failure. Depending on the version and generation, the Q5 weighs between 1,700 and 2,100 kg, is frequently driven fully loaded, tows, tackles mountain passes with a full family on board, or spends long stretches on the motorway at sustained revs. This usage profile keeps the turbo under thermal and mechanical stress for far longer than an equivalent saloon. The direct consequence: oil ages more quickly in the turbo's lubrication circuit, the bearings wear prematurely, and the symptoms follow — whistling, blue smoke on start-up or on the overrun, and a noticeable loss of power on the 3.0 TDI quattro under load. Before fitting a new turbo, identifying and correcting the root cause is essential: oil quality and level, condition of the feed circuit, and any possible fouling on the intake side or EGR.

Diesel: three engine families, with references that do not cross over

The Q5 diesel covers two main architectures. The 2.0 TDI blocks encompass around ten engine codes spread across several power outputs: CAGA, CAGB, CAGC for the first-generation 2.0 TDI; CAHA, CAHB, CGLB and their variants for the 170 and 177 hp versions; CNHA, CNHC, CZJA, DDDA, DETB, DFVA for the 190 hp version; DFBA and DTPA for the 40 TDI 204 mild hybrid; DCPC, DCPE, DMGA for the 45 TDI, 50 TDI and 50 TDI mild hybrid. The same code can appear across several power outputs: CAHA, for instance, is found on the 170 hp version in quattro 163 and 170 hp trim, and on the 170/177 hp line. Checking the code stamped on the block is essential before placing any order, as turbo references are not interchangeable between these families. The 3.0 TDI quattro blocks (CAPA, CCWA, CCWB for the 211 and 240 hp versions) use specific variable-geometry turbos, distinct from those fitted to the 2.0 TDI.

Petrol: 2.0 TFSI and 3.0 TFSI SQ5 — configurations not to be confused

On the petrol side, the 2.0 TFSI is available in 180, 211 and 220 hp outputs with engine codes CAEA, CAEB, CAED, CDNB, CDNC, CFKA, CPMA, CPMB. Certain codes (CAEA, CAEB, CDNB, CDNC, CFKA) appear across several power outputs: the correct turbo reference depends on the exact engine code, not solely on the stated power output. The 3.0 TFSI of the SQ5 (engine code CWGD) is a combined supercharger and turbo forced-induction configuration, with a turbo reference specific to this engine. All turbos listed for the Q5 are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi Q5 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi Q5 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
