CAGA, CAHA, CNHA, DFVA: four engine code families, one Q5 2.0 TDI, four different turbos

On the Q5 2.0 TDI, the engine code is the only reliable way to identify the correct turbo. The 17 engine codes covered here fall into three families with distinct manufacturer references, and several codes appear across more than one power group: CAHA and CGLB, for example, cover both the 170 hp standard version and the 170 hp quattro, yet they do not necessarily share the same turbo reference depending on the configuration. Mixing up the groups means ordering the wrong part.

Earlier-generation engine codes: CAGA, CAGB, CAGC

The engine codes CAGA, CAGB, CAGC form a group of their own, with their own manufacturer references (03L145702 series and equivalents), distinct from the CAHA or CGL codes. These engines were fitted to first-generation Q5 models, and their variable-geometry turbo has different dimensional and flow characteristics from later units. Checking the engine code before cross-referencing the OEM reference is essential.

190 hp engine codes: CNHA, CNHC, CZJA, DDDA, DETB, DFVA

The 190 hp group covers six engine codes — CNHA, CNHC, CZJA, DDDA, DETB, DFVA — and corresponds to the EA288 generation. These units use turbos from the 04L253056 series, with numerous sub-references depending on the model year and whether the vehicle is quattro or not. Worth noting: CNHC also appears in the 170/177 hp group, which illustrates precisely why the stated power output alone is not enough to identify the correct part. Oil feed line or intake circuit fouling is the primary cause of turbo failure on these engines; no reconditioned turbo should ever be fitted without first addressing the root cause of the original failure.
