Petrol Engines BMW Série 2: Before and After the N20 / B48 Transition

The petrol Série 2 from 2014 to 2021 is built around two families of four-cylinder engines whose reliability profiles differ markedly. The N20 (codes N20B20A, N20B20B, N20B20D) is known for timing chain issues at high mileage: elongation of the plastic tensioner manifests as a dull knock on cold starts, fault codes related to camshaft timing, and, in advanced cases, a loss of oil pressure. Engine replacement is often necessary before complete mechanical failure occurs, as preventive intervention is less damaging to the block. The B48A20A which succeeds it on the 2.0i adopts a revised architecture and has a more favourable record on this specific point.

2.0i: Four Codes, One Engine Capacity – Non-Interchangeable Blocks

The 2.0i spans two distinct generations of engine block. The codes N20B20A, N20B20B and N20B20D belong to the N20 family, introduced on the Série 2 from 2014. The code B48A20A corresponds to the B48 generation, which is architecturally different, with a revised block and bedplate. These four codes are not interchangeable: the year of manufacture and the chassis variant (F22, F23, F45, F46) determine which one was fitted as standard. Checking the engine code stamped on the block is essential before placing any order – engine capacity alone is not sufficient to distinguish between the families.

1.5i and Code B38A15A: Three-Cylinder Entry-Level Engine

The 1.5i, identified by the single code B38A15A, is a three-cylinder engine from the B38 family, fitted to the entry-level versions of the Série 2 Active Tourer and Gran Tourer. Its modular architecture shares components with the B48 but remains a distinct block, not to be confused with the four-cylinder. The characteristic vibrations of a three-cylinder engine can mask mechanical symptoms; an accurate fault diagnosis before removal is still necessary to assess whether the cause is internal to the block.
