Likewise, the 220D uses the B47D20A, whose references differ from those of the B47C20. Before placing any order, the engine code stamped on the block — not the stated power output — is the only reliable reference.

On variable-geometry diesels, the typical signs are a noticeable loss of power, an abnormal whistling noise, or persistent exhaust smoke. On the B48 petrol units, a CHRA or bearing failure often presents as a dull rumble under acceleration. In both cases, the root cause — insufficient lubrication, contaminated oil, an ingested foreign body, or an unprimed oil circuit — must be addressed before fitting the new turbo, otherwise the replacement part will deteriorate rapidly.
