Série 7: variable-geometry diesel turbos and wastegate petrol turbos — two opposing forced-induction philosophies

The turbo range for the Série 7 divides clearly: the majority of engines are diesel — 730d, 740d and their xDrive variants — alongside two petrol families, the 750i (N63B44A, N63B44B} and the 740i/740Li (N55). This split is not merely a matter of fuel type: it determines the very design of the turbo. The 3.0 6-cylinder in-line diesel units — whether they carry the code M57D30, M57 D30, 306D1 (earlier generation) or M57N2, 306D3, N57D30, N57D30B (later generations) — are fitted with variable-geometry turbos. Diesel exhaust gases, which carry more soot and run cooler at low revs, require this type of variable flow distribution; progressive fouling of the moving vanes is the primary thing to monitor on these engines. The N63 and N55 petrol units operate on a different principle: boost is regulated by a wastegate, with significantly higher thermal stresses due to the elevated exhaust temperatures associated with petrol combustion.

Several generations of 730d: turbos that are not interchangeable

The 730d illustrates the most common identification pitfall on this page: three families of codes coexist under the same commercial name. The M57D30 / M57 D30 / 306D1 corresponds to an earlier generation than the M57N2 / 306D3, which is itself distinct from the N57D30 or the N57D30B (730d xDrive, 740d, 740d xDrive). OEM references differ between each family — the 758351, 777853 and 821719 series have no cross-compatibility whatsoever. Only the engine code stamped on the block can determine with certainty which reference to order.

N63 biturbo and N55: petrol-specific causes of failure

On the N63B44 (750i and variants, including the ActiveHybrid 7), the V8 twin-turbo configuration with turbos housed inside the V exposes components to extreme temperatures and severe lubrication stress at hot idle. A sharp whistling noise and persistent blue smoke — whether cold or hot — are the most common symptoms on this architecture. On the N55 (740i, 740Li), the single turbo is subjected to different demands; failures more often stem from degraded oil or a delay in lubrication. In both cases, fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause — oil quality, intake circuit sealing, oil filter condition — will lead to rapid deterioration of the part.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your BMW 7 Series Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my BMW 7 Series Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
