The X6 3.0 petrol uses two distinct turbo configurations depending on whether the engine code is N54 or N55

This is the first pitfall to watch out for with this engine: the X6 xDrive35i 3.0 was produced with two different blocks, the N54B30 and the N55B30A, which do not use the same turbos. The N54 is a twin-turbo unit with fixed geometry and a wastegate; the N55 moves to a single variable-geometry turbo. The manufacturer references for each family bear no relation to one another — mixing up the two engine codes when ordering will result in receiving an incompatible part. The engine code stamped on the block is therefore the only reliable starting point, ahead of any body reference or commercial designation.

N54B30, N55B30A, N63B44A: three engine code families, three sets of references

The collection covers all petrol engines in the X6 range, every one available as a new turbo with no old unit to return. The N54B30 / N54B30A (xDrive35i depending on version) features a twin-turbo configuration whose manufacturer references include, among others, the 49131-07290 to 49131-07359 families. The N55B30A (later X6 xDrive35i) uses a different family, centred on references such as 49131-07355 and BMW equivalents 11657563704, 11657649295 or 11657649297, among others. The N63B44A fitted to the xDrive50i and ActiveHybrid — a 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo — has its own references, such as 18539880007 or 11657588995, with no crossover possible with the 3.0 blocks.

Common causes of turbo failure on N54 and N55 blocks

On these high-pressure direct-injection engines, deterioration of the lubrication circuit is the most common cause of turbo failure: degraded oil, a blocked feed pipe, or oil changes left too long. Typical symptoms include a whistling noise under acceleration, blue smoke when the engine is warm, or the engine entering a restricted performance mode. Identifying and rectifying the root cause before replacement is essential: fitting a new turbo to a contaminated oil circuit or an unresolved air leak upstream will lead to the same failure. Checking the condition of the manifold gasket and the integrity of the entire intake circuit is a systematic prerequisite on the N54, which is well known for its high thermal stresses.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your BMW X6 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my BMW X6 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
