BMW X5 diesel and petrol turbos: before and after the switch to N-series engines

On the X5, the boundary between the M57 generation and the N47, N57 and N55 engines marks a clear shift in turbo behaviour. The M57 D30 engines (codes 306D2, M57306D3), found in the 3.0d 184, 211 and 235 hp variants, are fitted to the earliest E53 and E70 versions: their variable-geometry turbo is prone to vane fouling on the moving turbine wheel, particularly with short urban journeys and a saturated diesel particulate filter. The classic symptoms are a whistling noise under acceleration, a drop in low-rev torque and erratic boost behaviour. For these engines, the turbo is offered new; several manufacturer references coexist depending on the exact model year and power variant, which is why it is essential to cross-check the engine code stamped on the block against the OEM reference.

N47, N57 and N63: identification pitfalls on later generations

The N47D20D (X5 25d and 25xd, F15/F85, 211 and 218 hp) is the only engine in this range for which the turbo is available as a reconditioned unit — the code N47S1 denotes the 218 hp variant. All other diesel and petrol engines on this page are supplied with a new turbo. The N57D30 (xDrive40d 313 hp) uses a turbo that is distinct from the N47's, despite a similar commercial designation: the references are not interchangeable between these two engine families. On the petrol side, the N63 B44 A (xDrive50i 4.4i twin-turbo) and the N54B30A, N54B30B, N55B30A engines (xDrive35i 306 and 320 hp) have different configurations: the N54 is twin-turbo, while the N55 is single-turbo with an integrated wastegate. Both engines can appear on the same commercial model depending on the production year, making it essential to verify the engine code before placing any order.

Address the root cause before replacing the turbo

Regardless of the engine, fitting a new or reconditioned turbo without identifying the cause of the original failure risks a rapid repeat failure. On BMW X5 diesel engines, the most common causes are insufficient lubrication at start-up (degraded oil, fouled lubrication circuit), EGR or DPF fouling affecting the variable geometry, or oil ingestion through the intake circuit. On the N54 and N55 petrol engines, bearing deterioration is often linked to oil that is overdue for a change or to repeated heat cycles without adequate purging. Diagnosing and correcting these issues is what determines the service life of the replacement part.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your BMW X5 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my BMW X5 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
