On the BMW X5, the engine code determines the exact part to order — not the engine capacity

The X5 covered here spans 2010 to 2018 and encompasses five engine codes across three engine variants. In the 3.0d diesel, three codes exist side by side: 306D3, N57D30A and N57D30B. These three 6-cylinder in-line units are not mechanically identical: the 306D3 belongs to the M57 generation, while the N57D30A and N57D30B belong to the N57 generation, with internal differences in the cylinder head, crankshaft and emissions management. Mixing up the two families will result in ordering an incompatible engine. The code is stamped on the block and also appears in the vehicle's manufacturer documentation.

2.0d and 2.0i: a single code each, but specific points to watch

The 2.0d is covered by a single code, N47D20D, a 4-cylinder diesel block known for sensitivity in its timing chain on the gearbox side. This is a key mechanical point to inspect before returning the engine to service. The 2.0i petrol is based on the N20B20A, a 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit, whose timing chain is also a documented point of attention on this engine family.

All engines listed are bare engines. Ancillary components (turbo, alternator, starter motor, water pump, etc.) are not included. The collection covers the X5 E70 and F15 depending on the engine variant. For the 3.0d, it is essential to check whether the vehicle is fitted with the M57 block (code 306D3) or the N57 (N57D30A / N57D30B) before selecting the reference: the external appearance of the two generations is similar, but their internal architecture differs.
