X1 E84 or F48: two generations, nine engine codes that never overlap

Between 2009 and 2022, the BMW X1 spanned two architecturally distinct generations. The first, theE84 (2009–2015), is built on BMW's classic rear-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive platform and uses engines from the N family: theN47D20 in diesel form (available as N47D20C and N47D20D) and theN20B20A, N20B20B, N20B20D in 2.0i petrol. The second, theF48 (2015–2022), switches to a front-wheel-drive architecture derived from the Mini, and adopts the new generation of modular B-series engines:B47C20A and B47C20B in 2.0d diesel,B48A20A in 2.0i petrol, and the three-cylinderB38A15A in 1.5i. No N-series engine is compatible with an F48 chassis, and vice versa.

N47 and B47: same engine capacity, two engines with no parts in common

The most common pitfall involves the 2.0d diesel. The N47D20 (E84) and the B47C20 (F48) share the same 1,995 cm³ displacement, yet their architectures differ fundamentally: the block, ancillary layout, engine mounts and gearbox interfaces are all different. Theengine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for confirming exact compatibility. On the N47 side, the C and D variants correspond to different power outputs and model years within the E84; on the B47 side, the A and B suffixes distinguish the entry-level version from the higher-torque xDrive version on the F48.

Three-cylinder B38: exclusive to the F48 1.5i

TheB38A15A is the only three-cylinder engine in the range, exclusive to the F48 from 2015 onwards. This 1,499 cm³ unit shares its modular design with the B family but has no equivalent on the E84. It covers a significantly smaller number of references than the 2.0d and 2.0i units. All engines in this catalogue are offered as bare engines; depending on the reference, two purchasing options are available — the customer either returns their old unit, or has their own returned unit rebuilt to the original specification.
