BMW X1: two generations, five engine codes, one gearbox family

Between 2009 and 2022, the BMW X1 spanned two generations — the E84 and the F48 — which share virtually nothing in mechanical terms. The E84 (2009–2015) is built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture inherited from the Série 3, whereas the F48 (2015–2022) switches to a transverse front-wheel-drive platform derived from the UKL group. This platform change brings a complete break in gearbox references: a unit from the E84 is incompatible with an F48, even where the engine capacity is identical.

Diesel: N47D20 on the E84, B47D20 and B47C20A on the F48

On the E84 generation, the 2.0d receives the N47D20, a four-cylinder diesel with a timing chain on the gearbox side — a well-documented point to watch on this engine family. The F48 adopts the B47D20 (2.0d) and B47C20A (2.0 18d) units, both from BMW's new modular engine family. All three codes are paired with 6-speed Getrag gearboxes, but the manufacturer references differ according to the engine code and the torque transmitted: the GS6X45DZ, GS6X60DA and GS6X37DZ references found in the collection illustrate the variety of ratios and torque ratings within a single mechanical family.

Petrol: N20B20 on the E84, B48B20 on the F48

The 2.0 petrol follows the same pattern of generational change. The E84 uses the N20B20, a four-cylinder turbo with Valvetronic variable valve timing. The F48 moves to the B48B20, a third-generation modular unit. Here again, the associated gearbox is a 6-speed manual, but the exact reference depends on the engine code stamped on the block — not simply on the engine capacity. Checking this code before placing any order is the only way to avoid a mismatch between the engine casing and the gearbox casing.
