Between 2009 and 2022, the X1 spanned two distinct generations — the E84 (2009–2015) and the F48 (2015–2022) — and this generational shift is precisely the dividing line between gearbox families. The E84 paired the 2.0d with the N47D20 blocks and the 2.0 petrol with the N20B20; the F48 introduced the modular B47D20 (diesel) and B48B20 (petrol) architectures, which are mechanically different despite sharing the same engine capacity. A gearbox from an E84 cannot be fitted to an F48: the bell housings, gear ratios and mountings all differ depending on the engine family.

Why the engine code takes precedence over engine capacity when identifying the correct reference

On the X1, every engine covered in this guide uses a 6-speed manual, both the 2.0d and the 2.0 petrol. However, gearbox references come in several variants (GS6X45DZ, GS6X60DA, GS6X37DZ…) corresponding to different final drive ratios and maximum torque ratings. The N47D20 in the E84 ranged from 116 to 177 hp depending on the version, which meant gearboxes were built to different specifications. Relying solely on the label "2.0d" without cross-referencing the engine code and body generation will consistently lead to ordering the wrong reference.

Key points to watch on these engines and their gearboxes

The N47D20 is well known for timing chain issues on the flywheel side — a fault unrelated to the gearbox itself, but one that may prompt a full mechanical overhaul. The B47D20 in the F48 addressed this design flaw. On the gearbox side, the GS6X45DZ does not cope well with repeated hard starts under load — a common usage pattern in a compact SUV. On these references, the 1st and 2nd gear synchronisers are the first components to show wear. Two purchasing options are available in the catalogue: exchange and customer-unit rebuild. The latter is the better choice when the fault is localised and the exact reference is difficult to source.
