BMW X1: do all versions come with the same 6-speed manual gearbox?

On the BMW X1 (2009–2022), the answer is no — even though the 6-speed manual is the only transmission featured in this collection, it does not come in a single universal reference. Between the E84 generation and the F48 generation, and between petrol and diesel engines, the gearboxes differ. Identifying your exact engine and engine code is therefore essential before placing any order.

Petrol or diesel: distinct engine families, different gearboxes

On the petrol side, the X1 2.0 successively received the N20B20 on the E84 generation and the B48B20 on the F48 generation. These two 2.0 turbo four-cylinder engines belong to different families and drive gearboxes with distinct references. On the diesel side, the X1 2.0d used the N47D20 followed by the B47D20: the same generational break applies. The N47D20 is notably known for timing chain issues on the gearbox side — a point not to be overlooked when carrying out a full drivetrain diagnosis.

References and sales options: what this collection covers

The references featured in this collection — including GS6X45DZ, GS6X60DA, GS6X37DZ and GS6-17DGBG8 — correspond to specific applications depending on the engine code and year. A single 2.0d designation can therefore cover several non-interchangeable references. Two sales options are available: exchange, where the customer returns their faulty unit, and rebuild on the customer's own unit, where the customer's gearbox is reconditioned and returned — a useful option when the unit has a rare reference or a vehicle-specific configuration.
