A compact SUV with xDrive all-wheel drive: what does that mean for the gearbox?

The BMW X3 is above all a versatile SUV, typically used in mixed urban and motorway driving, occasionally for light towing or on poor road surfaces. This versatility places different demands on the gearbox compared with a conventional saloon: frequent transitions between driving modes, torque distributed to all four wheels via the xDrive system, and repeated laden starts all wear the synchromesh rings and bearings in a specific way. When the gearbox fails, replacement is made more complex by the limited accessibility of the powertrain in a SUV of this size.

Diesel or petrol – two very distinct engine families

On the BMW X3 covered by this collection (2004–2017), two engine types are concerned. The 2.0d covers engine codes M47D20 and N47D20: these are two generations of four-cylinder diesel engines that do not share the same gearbox. The M47D20, the older unit, and the N47D20, which replaced it, each take a 6-speed manual gearbox with different references — checking the engine code stamped on the block is therefore essential to avoid ordering the wrong unit. The 2.0 petrol engine (code N46B20) represents a significantly smaller proportion of this collection, with a single associated 6-speed manual gearbox.

6-speed manual: key points specific to the X3

All gearboxes in this collection are 6-speed manuals. On the X3, the all-wheel-drive system requires a specific xDrive gearbox, which sets it apart from rear-wheel-drive versions of the BMW range with similar engines. The references found in this collection — such as GS6X37DZ or GS6X45DZ — carry the "X" prefix that is characteristic of the four-wheel-drive configuration. A gearbox from a rear-wheel-drive vehicle cannot be substituted here. The letter and suffixes of the full reference vary according to engine torque and year: two X3 2.0d models may carry different references depending on their model year.
