BMW X3 petrol or diesel turbo: are the geometries and constraints really comparable?

On the BMW X3, virtually all the engines covered in this guide are diesel. Petrol units are limited to the N20B20A (xDrive20i 184 hp, xDrive28i 245 hp) and the N55B30A (xDrive35i, sDrive35i). This split matters when it comes to the turbo: petrol engines run at exhaust gas temperatures significantly higher than those of diesels, and use fixed-geometry turbos with a mechanical wastegate. Diesels, on the other hand, rely heavily on variable geometry, which adjusts the vane opening according to engine speed — a mechanism that is more sensitive to clogging and oil quality.

2.0 and 3.0 diesel: several engine families, distinct turbos

The 2.0 diesel spans three quite different engine generations. The older M47D20 / 204D4 (150 hp) predates the N47D20 / N47D20C (163 hp to 184 hp depending on the variant) and the B47D20A (184 hp and 190 hp). These three families do not share the same turbo: the manufacturer reference differs with each generation, and even within the N47, the power output (163 or 184 hp) can determine a distinct reference. The 3.0 diesel follows the same logic: the M57 D30 (306D3) (211 and 218 hp), the N57D30A (30d) and the N57 D30 B (xDrive35d) are three distinct engines, each with their own references. Confusing an N57D30A with an N57 D30 B is a common mistake that leads to incompatibility.

Causes of failure and key checks before replacement

On variable-geometry diesels, the most common symptoms are black or blue smoke under acceleration, an abnormal whistling noise, and inconsistent boost. Clogging of the variable-geometry vanes by exhaust gas recirculation is a well-established cause on N47 and N57 engines. On the petrol N20 and N55 units, failure more often stems from insufficient lubrication — worn turbo seals, bearings damaged by degraded oil or excessively long service intervals. In every case, identifying and rectifying the root cause of the fault before replacement is essential: fitting a new turbo onto a contaminated oil circuit or a leaking intake will lead to rapid failure again. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference for selecting the correct manufacturer part number.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your BMW X3 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my BMW X3 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
