Reconditioned BMW X3 2.0d Gearbox: from the M47D20 (2004) to the N47D20 (up to 2017)

The engine code is the first reference to check before placing any order. The M47D20 was fitted to the X3 E83 produced from approximately 2004 to 2006, while the N47D20 takes over on the X3 F25 through to 2017. Both generations are fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but the gearbox references are not shared: the GS6X37DZ and GS6X45DZ families correspond to distinct architectures depending on the generation and the torque transmitted.

To identify the correct reference precisely — GS6X37DZ or one of the GS6X45DZ variants (THBJ, TH8J, TH6J…) — the engine code stamped on the engine block must be cross-referenced with the vehicle's year of production. Confusing the two engine families will invariably result in a mechanical incompatibility.
